With its debut in 1997, the Grand Theft Auto series not only popularized open-world games, but also those where we could embody an unscrupulous criminal and explore what it was like to belong to the criminal underworld. With its huge success and numerous sequels, it was only a matter of time before other studios tried to adapt this concept to their own franchises, many of them unsuccessful. But straight from Japan, SEGA presented us with the Yakuza series. In these open-world adventures, we would explore diverse urban environments in Japan, learning about the culture associated with Japanese gangs and everything that comes with it. After numerous sequels, spin-offs, and even a name change—the series is now known as "Like a Dragon"—SEGA and the studio Ryu Ga Gotoku have released the Director's Cut version of their first title—in chronological order within the game's storyline—Yakuza 0.
