Young Ukrainians were loaded into freight cars and sent to Germany to work in factories, farms, mines, and military plants of the Third Reich. They wore the OST patch on their chests. Three letters stood for "Eastern Worker." But in essence, it was the mark of a slave. Ukrainians became one of the largest groups of Ostarbeiter. Millions of people were taken from Ukraine for forced labor. Many were very young: 16, 17, 19 years old. Their lives were just beginning—but instead of school, family, and a future, barracks, hunger, humiliation, and hard labor awaited them. But the worst began not only in Germany. When the war ended, many believed they would finally return home. But at home, they were often awaited not as victims, but as suspects. NKVD filtration camps, interrogations, inspections, the stigma of "working for the Germans," closed career paths, the fear of telling the truth even to their own children. Soviet textbooks barely covered this tragedy. It was too inconvenient a story. Because it showed that after Nazi slavery, many people went through another circle of hell—this time in their own homeland. This issue tells the story of the Ukrainian Ostarbeiters. A story of stolen youth. A story of silence.
