2023 Global Encounters Network Seminar Series Thursday 16 November 2023 Topic – Inland Seas: Maritime Imagery in the Central Plateau of Groote Eylandt Speaker – Professor Annie Clarke, University of Sydney In this seminar, Prof Annie Clarke will present results from a survey of rock art sites carried out in collaboration with Dr Ursula Frederick across the Central Plateau of Groote Eylandt in 2019, prior to COVID. Focusing on maritime and marine motifs – in particular those of Makassan praus and dugout canoes – the seminar will discuss preliminary ideas about how Groote Eylandt people extended their memories and experiences of the maritime world and their encounters with Makassans onto and into the stone country of Yantarrnga (Central Hill).
