Cities of the Adriatic Lagoons: ‘Venice’, Aquileia and Ravenna – Emeritus Professor David L. Kennedy
Abstract: The north-western end of the Adriatic Sea is characterised by low-lying land, islands, marshes and lagoons. Venice is the most famous city in this water region but it was a late-Roman development, a successor to the earlier small towns of the Veneti, most notably Altinum. Better known in Roman times were Aquileia and Ravenna, both major port cities now several kilometres inland, surrounded by reclaimed lands. Presented to the Roman Archaeology Group on Saturday, 26th September 2020 at the University of Western Australia.
