This particular male was first seen in 2014 as a 3-4 year old in a area referred to the Burstall Pass, and because of that i named him "Burt". Not yet a dominant contender he chose this middle ground to avoid conflict with bigger males in the places with better food sources. Each spring I'd see him venture east to the front country to find a suitable mate. It seemed like every season he was pairing up with a female the same age, who had yet to reach sexual maturity that would allow her to have cubs. Finally after mating with her in 2018, she emerged in 2019 with two cubs. You could every spring he was a little bit bigger, and really filling out to become "the bear" in terms of hierarchy and the right to mate. At the end of the video you can see from the images supplied, he has become a massive and gorgeous male bear. With him pairing up with his favorite girl yet again this May, and with her recently booting her two three year old cubs who actually are most likely his, there's a great chance in 2023 she will have new babies belonging to Burt.
