Mission of the Word of Life / Korea Baptist Convention Title: What Kind of Life Should We Live? Date: July 22, 2026 Speaker: Rev. Hong Jung-hyun Mission of the Word of Life for Your Soul https://www.jbch.org The Mission of the Word of Life (Korea Baptist Convention) delivers the Word of God to all people around the world. During this precious time when the Summer Retreat is underway, we hope this will be a time for you to deeply meditate on what it means to live the life of a saint who joyfully devotes themselves to the Lord, while keeping in mind the spiritual warfare taking place between the Kingdom of God and the powers of Satan. JBCH [Sermon Summary] 1. Israel’s Idolatry and Spiritual Insensitivity "The people chose new gods, and war came upon the gates; yet among the forty thousand men of Israel, shields and spears were seen." (Judges 5:8) The fundamental reason the people of Israel suffered extreme oppression for twenty years at the hands of the foreign kings Jabin and Sisera was that they abandoned the Lord God and chose new idols (Baal and Asherah). When countless people lived driven by carnal desires (greed, lust, and ambition), great hardships and discipline came upon them. If we are not spiritually awake, we drive God out of the center of our lives and chase after the world. 2. The Holy Driving Force of Those Who Love the Lord "O Lord, may all Your enemies perish in this way, and may those who love You rise like the sun rising in its strength." (Judges 5:31) While people of the world are driven by the desires of the flesh, the driving force behind a born-again Christian's life of faith and service is precisely the 'heart that loves the Lord.' A life that hates evil because it loves God and actively participates in the Lord's work is the very image of a glorious life, like the sun rising in its strength. 3. The Diverse Attitudes of Saints Facing Spiritual Warfare In the era of the judges Deborah and Barak, the war against the Canaanite army was a spiritual war in which God Himself sent rain and the stars fought. In the face of that war, the attitudes of the people were clearly divided. Zebulun and Naphtali / Jael: These were the prosperous ones who fought risking death and sparing no life, and who boldly condemned Sisera, the enemy of evil, out of their love for the Lord. Deborah, Barak, and the princes: They willingly devoted themselves among the people to praise God. The Tribe of Reuben: Although they made a 'great resolution' to participate in the war, they sat among the sheepfolds, weighing the great and small in their hearts and hesitating repeatedly, and ultimately failed to participate. The inhabitants of Meros: Despite being closest to the battlefield, they did not help Jehovah due to their indifference, and received a severe curse from the angel of God. 4. Our Faith Recorded by the Lord and the Summer Retreat Just as Nehemiah recorded the rebuilding of the city walls or the records of the lists of Ezra and Nehemiah, the Lord knows and records individually who was faithful from beginning to end, who quietly slipped away in the middle, and who was zealous in the Lord's work. From the moment we are saved, we are spiritual soldiers transferred from the kingdom of Satan to the kingdom of the Son of Love. During the Summer Retreat, when the greatest number of souls receive forgiveness of sins and return to the Lord, I earnestly hope that we will not hesitate like Reuben or be indifferent like Meros, but instead live a wise life of actively praying and serving for the gospel of eternal life, leading even one more soul into the Lord's embrace. [Scripture] Then Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang, saying, “Praise the Lord, for the leader of Israel has led him, and the people have gladly dedicated him.” (Judges 5:1-2) But Jeshurun has grown fat and kicked with his feet. You have grown fat, bloated, and affluent; you have forsaken God who made you and have treated the Rock who saved you with contempt. (Deuteronomy 32:15) They sacrificed not to God, but to the devil—to gods they did not know, to new gods that have arisen in recent times, to the things your ancestors did not fear. (Deuteronomy 32:17) Zebulun is a people who risk death and do not spare their lives; Naphtali is likewise on the high places of the plain. (Judges 5:18) The word of the angel of the Lord is: “Curse Meroz! You shall curse its inhabitants again and again, for they have not come to help the Lord, nor have they come to help the Lord against the mighty warriors.” He did so (Judges 5:23) Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their lives for me. Not only I, but all the churches of the Gentiles also give thanks to them. (Romans 16:3-4) He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption—the forgiveness of sins. (Col 1:13-14)
