Sedimentation Conditions in an Ancient Environment: The Phosphate Basin Activity 9: Sedimentation Conditions in an Ancient Environment: The Phosphate Basin Phosphates are sedimentary rocks characterized by their exceptional richness in the mineral P2O5, which is of significant economic importance. These rocks form in sedimentary environments characterized by specific bioclimatic and geomorphological conditions. What are the characteristics of phosphate rocks? What conditions favored the formation of phosphate rocks? Distribution of Phosphate Deposits in Morocco Morocco possesses the largest phosphate deposits in the world, representing more than three-quarters of global reserves. The main phosphate basins in Morocco are: Ouled Abdoun Basin, in Khouribga. El Gantour Basin, in Youssoufia, Benguerir. Meskala Basin, in Chichaoua. Oued Eddahab Basin, Boukraa Location of Phosphate Deposits in Morocco Mineralogical and Fossil Composition of Phosphate Rocks In phosphate deposits in Morocco, the rocks form sequences of layers or strata. Phosphate layers are intercalated with layers of marl and siliceous marl, often with marly-calcareous and marly-clay layers. Three types of phosphate rocks are distinguished, characterized by the diversity of their mineralogical and paleontological compositions: phosphate limestone, siliceous phosphate, and sandy phosphate. Sandy phosphate: the most common type, it consists of very fine phosphate grains, including: Glauconite grains: an iron-rich mineral that forms exclusively in shallow marine environments. Oolites: small spheres resulting from the chemical precipitation of phosphates in the form of rings around a mineral or organic nucleus. Foraminifera tests, completely or partially phosphated. Pellets: represented by ovoid grains, rarely elongated, with a size less than 2 mm. These grains do not have a well-defined internal structure. Coprolites: these are the excrement of vertebrates and invertebrates. They consist of phosphate particles plus pellets, with a size ranging from 400 µm to a few millimeters. Nubecularia: are characteristic of epicontinental seas with calcareous sedimentation. Some fossils from phosphate deposits in Morocco. The fauna includes numerous remains of marine reptiles (mosasaurs, leiodon) and marine crocodilians. Fish (bony fish, rays, sharks, etc.) are also very numerous and have modern-day counterparts living in tropical seas. Some fossils from the phosphate deposits in Morocco Phosphates are composed of phosphate elements in the form of grains made up of the remains of vertebrate and invertebrate organisms, coprolites, and minerals. Among these grains are: Glauconite grains: an iron-rich mineral that forms in shallow marine environments (continental shelf). Various marine fossils (fish, reptiles) whose modern-day counterparts live in tropical seas. This allows us to assume that the Moroccan phosphate sediments were formed in a shallow marine environment. Sedimentation conditions of phosphate rocks: The phosphates of Morocco were deposited over a very long period, from approximately 80 million years ago to 40 million years ago. The following stratigraphic column shows the distribution of levels characterizing the phosphate deposits in the Khouribga Basin. 2) The phosphate deposits occur as sequences of phosphate layers alternating with levels of clay, marl, limestone, or silica. The thickness of the layers varies from one deposit and level to another. The deposition of the phosphate sediments spans a period of 40 to 80 million years (from the end of the Cretaceous to the beginning of the Tertiary). 3) The fossils (especially fish) present in the phosphate deposits indicate that the sedimentary environment was shallow marine, extending from the coast to the pelagic zone, with paleo-ecological conditions characterized by a temperate to warm climate, similar to that currently found in tropical and subtropical seas. Theories Explaining the Formation of Phosphate Rocks Phosphates can be of either organic or mineral origin. Various theories have attempted to explain the origin of phosphate deposits, but Kazakov's theory (1950) remains the most logical. Three main theories are distinguished: Mineral Origin Theory: Formation of phosphates from volcanic flows and underwater thermal waters, and the leaching of volcanic rocks. Biological Origin Theory: Chemical and biochemical alteration of the remains of organisms at the bottom of the sea. Upwelling Theory (Kazakov's Theory).
