ചരിത്രം തിരുത്തിയ കുട്ടി: ഫാത്തിമ തഹലീയ

At 32, advocate Fathima Thahliya scripted an iconic victory by defeating LDF convener T. P. Ramakrishnan in the CPM stronghold of Perambra, becoming the first woman MLA in the 75-year history of the Indian Union Muslim League. In a conversation with me, Ms Thahliya spoke about her struggles — within the family and outside — to pursue her passion for politics. Her political foray began when she became the first woman to be elected national vice-president of the Muslim Students Federation. As a founding member of Haritha, the women’s wing of the MSF, she often found herself at odds with sections of the League hierarchy. Yet, she remained calm and steadfast. She went on to be elected to the University of Calicut Senate, became a secretary of the Muslim Youth League, and later a councillor in the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation, winning from Kuttichira ward — the political springboard of former Chief Minister C. H. Mohammed Koya. “But the nomination for the Assembly contest in Perambra came as a real surprise. It was sheer magic on the part of the League leadership,” Ms Thahliya said. The path to electoral politics, however, was far from easy. Her family had initially resisted her political inclinations, hoping she would become a doctor. Instead, armed with an LL.M., she chose the legal profession. “I could not remain within the frame of a typical family girl. Had I done so, I would not be where I am today. But my parents suffered a lot for my sake. I owe them immensely,” she reflected.Her marriage to advocate Shahsada, she says, became a liberating force. He remains her pillar of support. One of the most poignant moments in the conversation was her recollection of narrating, at an interfaith conference in Washington, D.C., how late party supremo Panakkad Syed Ali Shihab Thangal had instructed party workers to stand guard around temples during the nationwide turmoil following the Babri Masjid demolition to prevent any harm. മുപ്പത്തിരണ്ടാം വയസ്സിൽ, അഡ്വ. ഫാത്തിമ തഹ്‌ലിയ പെരാമ്പ്രയെന്ന സി.പി.എം കോട്ടയിൽ എൽ.ഡി.എഫ് കൺവീനർ ടി.പി. രാമകൃഷ്ണനെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തി ചരിത്രപരമായ വിജയം കുറിച്ചു. ഇതിലൂടെ ഇന്ത്യൻ യൂണിയൻ മുസ്ലിം ലീഗിന്റെ 75 വർഷത്തെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ആദ്യ വനിതാ എം.എൽ.എയായി അവർ മാറി. തന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ താൽപ്പര്യങ്ങൾ പിന്തുടരുന്നതിനായി കുടുംബത്തിനകത്തും പുറത്തും താൻ നേരിട്ട പോരാട്ടങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് അവർ സംസാരിച്ചു. മുസ്ലിം സ്റ്റുഡന്റ്സ് ഫെഡറേഷന്റെ (എം.എസ്.എഫ്) ആദ്യ വനിതാ നാഷണൽ വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടതോടെയാണ് അവരുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ജീവിതം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. എം.എസ്.എഫിന്റെ വനിതാ വിഭാഗമായ 'ഹരിത'യുടെ സ്ഥാപക നേതാവ് എന്ന നിലയിൽ, ലീഗ് നേതൃത്വത്തിലെ ചില വിഭാഗങ്ങളുമായി അവർക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും വിയോജിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നിരുന്നാലും, അവർ തന്റെ നിലപാടുകളിൽ ഉറച്ചുനിന്നു. "ഒരു സാധാരണ കുടുംബസ്ഥയായ പെൺകുട്ടി എന്ന ചട്ടക്കൂടിനുള്ളിൽ ഒതുങ്ങിനിൽക്കാൻ എനിക്ക് കഴിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഇന്ന് ഞാൻ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഈ സ്ഥാനത്ത് എത്തില്ലായിരുന്നു. എന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ എനിക്ക് വേണ്ടി ഒരുപാട് സഹിച്ചു. അവരോട് ഞാൻ ഏറെ കടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു," അവർ ഓർത്തെടുത്തു. അഭിഭാഷകനായ ഷഹ്സാദയുമായുള്ള വിവാഹം തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ വലിയൊരു മാറ്റമുണ്ടാക്കിയെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കരുത്തായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നുവെന്നും അവർ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു. വാഷിംഗ്ടൺ ഡി.സി.യിൽ നടന്ന ഒരു സർവ്വമത സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ അവർ പങ്കുവെച്ച ഒരു അനുഭവം സംഭാഷണത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വികാരാധീനമായ നിമിഷമായിരുന്നു. ബാബറി മസ്ജിദ് തകർത്തതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് രാജ്യവ്യാപകമായി ഉണ്ടായ സംഘർഷാവസ്ഥയിൽ, ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് യാതൊരു നാശവും സംഭവിക്കാതെ കാവൽ നിൽക്കാൻ അന്തരിച്ച പാർട്ടിയുടെ പരമോന്നത നേതാവ് പാണക്കാട് സയ്യിദ് മുഹമ്മദലി ശിഹാബ് തങ്ങൾ പ്രവർത്തകർക്ക് നൽകിയ നിർദ്ദേശത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് അവർ അവിടെ സംസാരിച്ചത്.
