Astana Srandil

Astana Srandil is located in Srandil Village, Jambon District, 11 km west of Ponorogo City towards Badegan. Pasarean Srandil is a complex or collection of several tombs belonging to the descendants of Regent Somoroto. Geographically, Pasarean Srandil is situated in a series of five interconnected hills. Listed from west to east, the five hills are Bukit Lemu, Bukit Bancak, Bukit Ngrayu, Bukit Srayu, and Bukit Srandil. Pasaean Srandil is located on Bukit Srayu, which means "Sugeng Rahayu," or the hill that brings salvation. The first figure buried and the one who laid the foundation for Pasarean Srandil was Raden Mertokusumo, the prime minister of Polorejo Regency who supported Prince Diponegoro in his fight against the Dutch colonialists. After Raden Tumenggung Brotonegoro, the Regent of Polorejo, was killed fighting the Dutch colonialists, his prime minister, Raden Dipotaruno, managed to escape and fled to Srandil Village, hiding in Goa Batu on Ngrayu Hill. Once the situation was secure, he ventured out of hiding and is thought to have changed his name to Raden Mertokusumo in an attempt to evade pursuit by Dutch soldiers. Therefore, the people of Srandil know Raden Mertokusumo better than Raden Dipotaruno to this day. In Srandil Village, Raden Mertokusumo served as an elder and role model for the Srandil community, alongside Kyai Mohibat, son of Kyai Kasan Yahya of Tegalsari, the first figure to clear Srandil Village. Both figures are highly respected by the Srandil community to this day. Before Raden Mertokusumo passed away, he advised the people of Srandil that upon his death, his remains should be buried on Srayu Hill, which means "Sugeng Rahayu" or the hill that brings salvation. It was on Srayu Hill that he escaped from the pursuit of Dutch soldiers, thanks to God's help. During the reign of Raden Mas Tumenggung Sumonagoro (Regent Somoroto II) in the 1830s, the Somoroto Regency was ruled by Raden Mas Tumenggung Sumonagoro (Regent Somoroto II). He requested that the 70-hectare Srandil Village be designated as a tax-free area to protect and maintain the Pasarean Srandil and to serve as a burial ground for the descendants of the Somoroto regents. Sunan Pakubuwono IV granted this request. The construction of the 24m x 24m perimeter fence around Pasarean Srandil, which remains sturdy to this day, likely began during the reign of Raden Mas Tumenggung Sumonagoro, and was then completed in 1931, as indicated by the Pasarean Srandil sign. Compared to Islamic tombs in the Indonesian archipelago, Pasarean Srandil is relatively young, having been built in the 19th century. However, its distinctive features as an "Islamic tomb in the Indonesian archipelago" remain, reflecting influences from both indigenous Indonesian Hindu and local (Javanese) cultures. In terms of the cemetery's layout, Pasarean Srandil is located in a hilly area and follows a three-yard layout. The first courtyard is located outside the building, while the second and third courtyards are located inside. This three-yard layout is a traditional Indonesian tradition, resembling a terraced pyramid-shaped shrine, a place of worship for ancestral spirits, with the rear being higher than the front. Usually, the most sacred tombs are located in the back yard (third yard).
