Tatar hordes descend upon a city, and the young prince Mikhail voluntarily gives himself up as a hostage to the khan to save his people. His servant Simeon is duty-bound to follow — but fear proves stronger than loyalty. Simeon betrays his master, and the prince departs into captivity alone. Wandering the Russian land, Simeon witnesses the miracles of the Mother of God: She sends rain to the suffering, saves a dying woman in childbirth, and shields the people from fire. Through these wonders, the Lord leads the hero along His path toward repentance and inner transformation. Meanwhile, the Horde plots a new raid. When Prince Mikhail learns of this, he sends word to his homeland — and for this act of courage, a guard's arrow strikes him down. But Simeon, changed by his trials, finds the prince, and together they race to warn the Russian army. The film's climax unfolds during the Great Stand on the Ugra River in 1480, which marked the end of Mongol-Tatar rule over Russia.
