I walk around the Jordaan in Amsterdam at night, through quiet streets and past beautiful canals. The Jordaan is a beautiful neighborhood that was originally built in the 17th century as a working-class district, home to laborers and immigrants arriving in Amsterdam. The living conditions were harsh, with large families squeezed into the small houses that we now find so picturesque. Over time, the neighborhood became a refuge for struggling artists and those fleeing persecution. However, due to poor maintenance, conditions deteriorated further. By 1900, an estimated 80,000 people lived here, often without proper sanitation. After World War II, there were even discussions about demolishing the Jordaan to make way for modern housing. Fortunately, it was preserved and gradually transformed into the beautifu, sought-after area it is today. What was once a poor neighborhood is now one of the most desirable - and expensive - places to live in Amsterdam. Finding accommodation here is difficult and comes with a high price tag, yet the streets still retain the character and history of their past.
