TRIBUN-SULBAR.COM, PASANGKAYU - The appearance of crocodiles in the Labuan Hamlet Beach area, Pasangkayu Village, Pasangkayu District, Pasangkayu Regency, is increasingly worrying local residents, especially fishermen who spend their daily time along the coast. According to residents, these estuarine predators are seen appearing almost every night near the shoreline, specifically where fishing boats are parked. This situation has made residents anxious because the crocodiles often come very close to where residents moor their boats and begin fishing activities. Sabir, a fisherman met at the location on Tuesday (June 16, 2026), said that at least three crocodiles are frequently seen in the area. According to him, one is very large, one is medium-sized, and the other is still small, suspected to be a juvenile. "There are three that often appear. One very large, one medium-sized, and another one is a baby. They are seen almost every night near the boat parking lot," he said. Sabir admitted that he has had several close encounters with crocodiles while going out to sea at night. He recounted that while shining a flashlight around his boat before setting out, he was startled by the presence of a crocodile not far from where his boat was docked. "I shone the flashlight near the boat, and suddenly there was a crocodile. I was shocked because it was so close," he said. According to Sabir, the appearance of crocodiles in coastal areas is suspected to be triggered by the habit of some fishermen and residents of throwing the remains of their catch into the sea. These remains are thought to be a food source, attracting crocodiles to the coastal area and eventually becoming accustomed to human activity. As a result, the predators reappear almost every night in the same location, causing unrest among the community. Although there have been no attacks on residents or fishermen, residents say they remain concerned because crocodiles can pose a safety hazard, especially for fishermen who go out to sea at night or in the early morning. Residents hope the local government and relevant agencies will immediately take anticipatory measures to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, Arhamuddin, Head of the Pasangkayu Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), urged the public to increase their vigilance when conducting activities in coastal areas and at sea. He asked fishermen to avoid areas frequently frequented by crocodiles, especially at night when these predators are more active in their search for food. "If possible, avoid areas frequently frequented by crocodiles, especially at night. Safety must be a priority," he said. Arhamuddin said his office plans to install warning signs around the area as a form of education and a reminder to the public to be more cautious when in coastal areas. He also reminded residents not to throw dead fish or other leftover catches into the sea, as this could attract crocodiles to the coastal area. He stated that fish and animal remains should be buried in the sand or disposed of in a safe place to prevent them from attracting these estuarine predators. With the increasing frequency of crocodile sightings on Labuan Beach, residents hope that preventative measures can be taken immediately so that fishermen and coastal communities can continue their activities safely without being threatened by these wild animals.
