We attended two train shows, including the Turkey Creek NMRA meet in the Kansas City area, and the NMRA National Train Show in the Saint Louis area. Train shows were something a lot of us missed during the pandemic, and it is great to see a lot of the events back on this year. It’s always nice to see fellow hobbyists, get inspired by layouts, and shop for trains. The National Train Show, as you can imagine, is one of the big model railroading events held every year. Thousands of railfans and model railroaders came out to see what was new and upcoming for the hobby. The three-day event had something for everyone- no matter what the scale or area of interest. There were a couple of huge N-scale layouts stretching for scale miles with very detailed scenes. One of the bigger ones was made up of modules from the folks at Gateway N- rack club from the Saint Louis region. There was this large setup of Free-mo HO scale modules with folks coming from across the country to add their piece to the giant puzzle. Yet another modular layout was here from the Wisconsin and Michigan Model Railroad Club which featured scenes from that region. The show is also a chance for manufacturers to show new products and give previews of things in the works. One of our first stops was the Class One Model Works booth displaying its new rolling stock and renderings of some GP40s it'll be releasing down the line. Later on, Athearn gave us a look at new locomotives and cars and mockup samples of new Amtrak Surfliner cars it's working on. We then stopped by Scaletrains and saw what it has to offer with the latest locomotives and freight cars. Walthers was on hand with highlighting a lot of its trains. Next door was Woodland Scenics showcasing its awesome scenery products tools and techniques Bachmann was on hand featuring its catalog offerings, from N and HO all the way up to the big G scale. We saw even more garden sized trains from LGB with these awesome Santa Fe units- making me wish I had a garden railway. There were also tons of hobby shops, including from Spring Creek Model Trains where I stocked up on some new Athearn Genesis ACF 4600 covered hoppers. Just across the aisle was Digikeijs and Iron Planet Hobbies featuring some of the latest in technology. Speaking of high-tech stuff, we also enjoyed East Coast Circuits lit things up with cool vehicles with flashing emergency lights. Back to the layout rooms, we visited with members of the Arlington Heights Society of Model Engineers from Illinois and took a look at their freelanced Arlington Heights Railroad. Another layout that wowed crowds was from the Jefferson County and Southern Model Railroad Club from nearby Festus, Missouri. One of the larger layouts that I enjoyed was the Overland Western Lines. It’s a freelanced railroad from the Milwaukee School of Engineering Society of Model Engineers. The layout featured a great mixture of country and city scenes with a double track mainline.
