For almost a month, residents of five villages in the Magaramkent district have been holding out hope that the ill-fated water main that broke in early December will finally be repaired. While repair crews are fixing one leak, another one is springing a leak. Residents of the village of Gilyar have staged a spontaneous rally, demanding a response from the authorities! The pipe has apparently been replaced, and the leak has also been fixed. But residents of the village of Gilyar in the Magaramkent district didn't enjoy running water for long. A couple of days after the widely announced repairs to the Dzhepel-Gaptsakh water main by local authorities, the pipe has sprung a leak again in several places. Emergency crews simply can't keep up with all the incidents. While they're fixing one thing, another keeps breaking, and so it goes on for almost a month. The patience of local residents is wearing thin. The pipe breaks with enviable regularity, every other day. Local deputies raised the issue not only with the district administration but also with various authorities in Makhachkala. Replacement of the long-suffering pipe has been long awaited here. Official requests regarding this matter to the district administration were submitted as early as April 2021. But for some reason, work only began in December. They wanted the best, but it turned out worse than ever. The long-awaited repair of the water main, installed back in the 1960s, has brought a host of problems to local residents instead of easing their lives. People say the problem lies in the thin-walled pipe, which is not suitable for high water pressure. The Magaramkent district administration is also concerned about the situation. In a phone conversation with us, the deputy head also didn't rule out the possibility that the pipes might be defective. Time will tell how the situation develops. In the meantime, thousands of residents in five villages in the Magaramkent district remain without a regular water supply.
