How do Aircraft Altimeters Work - For Student Pilots
How does the altimeter work? As part of my Video Series on Aircraft Systems and the Pitot-Static System, I explain how the Altimeter works. The altimeter uses the static air source and an aneroid wafer filled with gas at sea level pressure to detect changes in static temperature and project them on the face of the altimeter. As an aircraft climbs, the static pressure decreases and causes the aneroid wafer to expand. The expanding wafer spins a gear system inside the altimeter changing the dials on the face of the instrument. As an aircraft descends, the static pressure increases and causes the aneroid wafer to contract. The contracting wafer spins the gears and changes the dials on the face of the altimeter. The pressure gradient in our atmosphere allows the altimeter to work in this manner. For every 1000 feet of altitude gain the pressure drops by one inch of mercury. This system alone, however, does not account for a non-standard temperature. This system is only accurate in standard temperature conditions. So what happens when a cold mass of air comes into the air you are flying and the temperature drops dramatically? Well, the altitude showing on your altimeter would rise because the altimeter thinks that you are gaining altitude. Why does the altitude rise when the temperature drops? This is because when the temperature drops, so does the pressure but the altimeter only relates a drop in pressure to an altitude gain. Therefore, changing the altimeter setting constantly to the most up-to-date altimeter setting corresponding to the current temperature conditions will keep the altimeter calibrated and the reading accurate. ◽️◽️◽️◽️◽️◽️ 🛩️ To get ALL our Video Lessons plus Written Lessons, Quizzes, Audio Lessons, eBooks, Test Prep books, Flash Cards, Practice Tests & Live Lessons with myself you can join our Online Ground School here: https://parttimepilot.com/private-pil... 🛩️ Checkride Prep: https://parttimepilot.com/private-pil... 🚀 FREE COURSE & Facebook Group: We are trying to tackle the problem of flight training expenses head on.
