Let's get to know them and learn together with this documentary. Tahsin Yarar was born in 1957 in the village of Kartalkaya, formerly known as Yukarı Sülemiş, in Burdur province. He became interested in the kabak kemane, a popular instrument in the region, and began making it. He is now a master maker known locally and internationally. Tahsin Yarar produces his regional instruments under the Avşar brand. He is married with two children. Master Tahsin; He uses gourds, boxwood, lambskin, horsehair, and baglama wire that he grows himself in his instrument. Tahsin Yarar, a highly talented retired teacher from Burdur, has been a 33-year-old master of the gourd fiddle, inspired by the sound of a folk song he listened to. He became a master of the gourd fiddle by extracting the sound from a folk song and developing it. In other words, he devoted 33 years to the sound of a single folk song. Tahsin Yarar, a 63-year-old father of two, never lost his passion for the gourd fiddle, even while teaching in different provinces. Yarar, who retired from teaching many years ago, has been passing the universal language of art and music on to future generations through his creations for 35 years. After drying the gourds he grows in his garden, Tahsin Yarar cuts and shapes them in his small workshop in the basement of his house. After filing the kemane handle, which he then forms, and attaching it to the gourd with an iron bar, the next step is to soften the cattle's pericardium in a container of water. He stretches this membrane over the cut gourd. He carves out the peg holes in the handle, which he crafts from juniper, maple, or butterfly wood. After this process, he creates motifs on the gourd and varnishes it. To play the kemane, Tahsin Yarar also creates a bow from horsetail. He then applies resin to the bow's hairs and begins playing the gourd, which he builds in about a week. Tahsin Yarar, who holds a certificate for performing and mastering the gourd violin from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, says he quickly learned both how to make and play the instrument after looking at the one he received from a friend. Tahsin Yarar, who also received training from Ege University masters, has earned his place among Türkiye's leading stringed instrument masters with his kemane, cura, and bağlama instruments. Yarar, who skillfully transforms gourds and juniper trees into instruments, also receives orders from Ankara, Istanbul, Sakarya, Kars, Diyarbakır, Bursa, Muş, and many other provinces. For Tahsin, the art of the gourd violin is a passion. He says he was completely unfamiliar with the instrument until 1985, but was inspired by the sound of an Ali Bey folk song he heard while working night shift at the school where he worked. He recounts with joy that his love for the gourd violin was first ignited when a friend told him he could make one and that he could teach him if he wanted. In his fluent narration, he said, "I sent word to the village to find gourds, and I found two. We immediately planted their seeds in the spring of that year. I made two of those gourds based on the kemane sample I had. I played them, and I saw they made a sound. Then I told myself, 'I can do this better.'" Tahsin Yarar, who is also a folk dance instructor and master teacher, both made and played the kemane and eventually turned to professional performance. He established connections with the masters of the kabak kemane in his circle. He applied to the instrument-making department of Ege University, joined the saz masters, benefited from their experience, and adapted their saz mastery to the kabak kemane. The saying "We have become like a couple to the kabak kemane" is his own. Master Tahsin Yarar, who is also involved in saz and cura making in addition to the kabak kemane, says, "The older the saz, the better its sound. This also applies to the kabak kemane. The older the kabak kemane, the more beautiful its sound becomes. I will continue to do this until I fall on my deathbed. Even if I quit, this work won't leave me; it's such a love. We have become like a couple to the kabak kemane; this is love." He says, and nothing else. Tahsin Yarar continues his informative and thought-provoking talk by stating that the kabak kemane is an emotional instrument! The kemane originally had three strings, but it can also be made with four or five strings. I think three strings are sufficient, but four strings help it reach an octave higher.
