The African Emperor Who Built 4,000 Schools Before Europe Had Universities: Askia the Great
He had no royal blood. No divine right. No ancestral claim to the throne. And yet, he built the greatest empire West Africa had ever seen. In 1493, Muhammad Ture seized the Songhai throne through sheer brilliance and military force. When the daughters of the previous king mocked him — calling him "a si kiya" (he will not be it) — he took their insult and made it his royal title. He became Askia the Great. And then he proved every single one of them wrong. At its peak, the Songhai Empire under Askia stretched over 1.4 million square kilometers — larger than all of Western Europe combined. He controlled more gold than any monarch on Earth. His armies were undefeated on home soil. And he built an educational system so advanced that Timbuktu became one of the greatest intellectual centers in the entire world — with an estimated 400,000–700,000 manuscripts covering astronomy, mathematics, medicine, law, philosophy, and more. This is the story of a man who: — Turned a stolen throne into a lasting dynasty — Funded schools and libraries when Europe was still in the dark ages — Imported the world's greatest scholars to transform his empire — Built institutions that outlasted him by centuries Askia Muhammad. The outsider who became the architect of African intellectual supremacy. If this kind of history moves you, like and subscribe — these stories deserve to be told.
