Built in 1930, ex‑JNR, transferred to Oigawa in 1994. Its annual inspection starts in June and lasts about 4–6 months: ~500 checkpoints and up to 10,000 parts. When parts are no longer available, engineers redraw from original plans and fabricate in‑house or by vendors. We follow the firebox‑top steam valve replacement: because the new valve’s port differs, a custom adapter is lathe‑machined (on a 1966 machine) from gunmetal (bronze) with skilled hand control. In the shop, teams also service non‑steam stock, dock bogies to car bodies, and refit the 1951‑era fans (generator + battery powered; not enough capacity for A/C).
