Today: Major Supreme Court decisions, and Venezuela assesses damage from severe earthquakes
Today as it Happened on Thursday, June 25, 2026: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on several high-profile cases Thursday, including that the Trump administration can proceed with ending temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Syria and Haiti. The court is also clearing the way for the Trump administration to potentially revive an immigration policy once used to turn back migrants seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. The death toll continues to rise as crews search for survivors after Venezuela was hit by back-to-back earthquakes. The quakes that struck the country overnight were the most powerful in more than a century. Right now, at least 188 people are dead and thousands have been injured. Both tolls are expected to rise. International correspondent Andreina Fermin was on the ground in Caracas on Thursday, where intense rescue and safety responses were underway. And the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is once again showing signs of strain. The U.K. is reporting that a cargo ship was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, said he was informed of an attack in the Gulf of Oman and that an IMO evacuation plan would be paused “until further clarity.” “Seafarer safety remains paramount,” Dominguez said. ------------------------------------- Follow Scripps News on other platforms— Join our newsletter at https://bit.ly/2q1tepr Follow us on Facebook: / scrippsnews Follow us on X: https://x.com/scrippsnews Follow us on Instagram: / scrippsnews Follow us on TikTok: / scrippsnews
