Journey Through Southern China - From Rural Yunnan to Shenzhen's Skyline

Welcome to Southern China, a land of remarkable diversity that surprises at every corner. This is a region where ancient villages meet futuristic skylines, and historic traditions gradually flow into modern life. For travelers, this part of the country offers spectacular natural scenery, bustling cities, lively markets, delicious food, and friendly, welcoming people. In this travel documentary, I take you back to some of my most memorable journeys in the South of China, after more than a decade of travel through the country, on multiple trips. From the surreal karst mountain landscapes of Yangshuo and Guilin to the mysterious tulou structures, built by the Hakka minority people. From the charming villages in the Dragon’s Backbone (Longji) rice terraces to the peculiar ‘stone forest’ of Shilin. From the Portuguese heritage and casinos of Macau to the vibrant farmers’ markets near Yuanyang. From the busy streets and stunning skyscrapers of Hong Kong to the tropical beaches of Hainan island. And from the fast-changing metropolis and technology hub of Shenzhen to the Cantonese culture and contrasts of Guangzhou city. Shaped by the Hani people, these mountains form a vast terraced landscape where water, climate and farming work in harmony. Here, we stay in local villages, experience local life, and visit lively food and farmers markets. After a brief stopover in attractive Kunming, ‘City of Eternal Spring’, we reach Shilin, translating as Stone Forest. This fantastic landscape of grey limestone pillars is a joy to explore, and also gives us a glimpse into China’s growing tourism sector. We enter Guangxi province and arrive in Yangshuo, set among striking karst peaks formed over millions of years. Travelers often stay longer here, captivated by the natural beauty and relaxed vibe. There are many ways to discover Yangshuo, including on bicycle, bamboo raft, or ferry vessels, providing a glimpse into rural life in China. Not far from here, are the tranquil Longji rice terraces, where we stay overnight in one of the villages. We continue our way to Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong and a center for Cantonese culture. This vibrant city offers contrasting images of traditions and modernity. After a brief detour to the intriguing tulou buildings in Fujian we enter Shenzhen, one of China’s largest and wealthiest cities. In just 40 years, it has grown from a small fishing village into a major electronics and high-tech metropolis, showcasing China’s economic growth. Just across the administrative border of Shenzhen is Hong Kong, a vibrant blend between East and West. Here, we explore Victoria Peak, ride the classic Star Ferry, and indulge in Cantonese cuisine. My personal highlight of Hong Kong is wandering Kowloon district, where we browse bustling markets, visit tranquil temples, and get a sense of the city’s energy and culture. Nearby Macau is known for its Portuguese heritage and massive casinos, and is a popular place to visit for Chinese tourists. We end our journey on Sanya on Hainan island, known for its tropical beaches and holiday resorts. Here, we also take a look at some of the fishing villages and the Nanshan temple complex, with its massive Guan Yin Buddha statue.
