A firefighter rescued a mother and daughter who were in danger during a fire that broke out late yesterday (the 8th) at a multi-family dwelling in Daejeon by catching the baby in a blanket. According to the Daejeon Dongbu Fire Station, a fire broke out on the third floor of a multi-family dwelling in Gayang-dong, Dong-gu, at around 11:22 PM yesterday. By the time firefighters arrived at the scene following reports from witnesses, the fire had already spread to the point where bright red flames were shooting out of the building. At that moment, a Vietnamese woman in her 20s was calling for rescue through a small window in the bathroom of the unit where the fire started. Her one-year-old daughter was with her. Given the urgent situation involving a young baby vulnerable to fire, the firefighters on the scene determined they could not wait until the air mattress was installed. Recognizing the need for a swift response, the firefighters decided to rescue the baby first using a blanket. Following the firefighters' instructions, the mother threw the child out the window from the third floor, and the baby landed safely inside the blanket that the firefighters had spread out beforehand, successfully rescuing her. The mother then jumped onto the air mattress as well. Fire Major Kim Jin-won, head of the Field Response Unit 2 at Daejeon Dongbu Fire Station, who commanded the scene at the time, stated, "When we arrived, the fire was at its peak, with flames even spilling out of the windows." He added, "A mother with her baby was calling for rescue through a small bathroom window." Major Kim continued, "It takes at least 10 minutes to set up an air safety mat, but because the situation was urgent, we used blankets from inside the ambulance." He explained, "We determined that the light baby could be rescued using a blanket, and then we used the air safety mat to rescue the mother." Three people, including the mother and daughter and other residents, are receiving treatment at a hospital for smoke inhalation, but fortunately, they are reported to have not sustained serious injuries. In addition to the mother and daughter, 15 residents of the multi-family dwelling were evacuated urgently. The fire authorities extinguished the fire completely within 55 minutes and plan to investigate the detailed cause of the fire through on-site inspection.
