Host: Roman Viktorovich Svetlov, Doctor of Philosophy, Director of the Graduate School of Philosophy, History, and Social Sciences at Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University. The authoritative academic journal Schole has published an article by Roman Svetlov dedicated to the Roman Emperor Flavius Claudius Julianus. His contemporaries nicknamed him "the Apostate" for his renunciation of Christianity and return to paganism. To this end, he even attempted to forge an alliance with Jewish communities, which the Roman emperors often persecuted. "At that time, unlike the still-young Christianity, Judaism was perceived as an ancient religion, and for Julianus, antiquity was synonymous with truth." To explain the conflicts between the Jews and the Roman pagan authorities, which led to three bloody wars in the first and second centuries, and to reconcile Jews and pagans, Julian had to seriously reformulate pagan ideas about the gods and the origins of the universe. One of his practical gestures toward the Jewish community was his decision in the winter of 363 to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple, destroyed in 70. However, this attempt was unsuccessful due to the earthquake of May 363 and the death of the emperor during the Persian campaign," the professor explained. The story of Julian the Apostate received widespread attention in the literature of his time and subsequent centuries. Of particular interest are the texts of Christian authors. They wrote about natural and miraculous phenomena that accompanied the earthquake's destruction of Julian's construction work. Research by modern scholars has proven that the earthquake then engulfed large areas in what is now Israel and Palestine. "By examining Julian's work, we learn how utopian projects emerge, which, according to their creators, are intended to unite the most diverse peoples and cultures. The case of the 'Apostate' is interesting because this great visionary attempted to combine two completely different religious and cultural traditions – Roman paganism and Judaism," added Roman Svetlov.
