Fatal Fury Special (Sega CD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of JVC's 1995 versus-fighting game for the Sega CD, Fatal Fury Special. Played through on the normal difficulty level with Ryo. The Sega CD port of Fatal Fury Special was one of those games that looked amazing in screen shots, with box-art and ads that very much gave the impression that you were getting a near arcade-perfect experience. In hind-sight, it was foolish to expect such a thing of the Sega CD, but there were a few too many compromises made to live up expectations. All the characters are here, the voices are present (even if they're muffled), and all of the moves/combos from the original Neo Geo game were included. It controls extremely well - the specials are easy to pull off and everything is pretty responsive. So, that alone ensures that this version isn't a complete bust. The presentation certainly leaves something to be desired, though. The characters sprites are big and detailed (makes for very nice screenshots, no doubt), and the dithered color usually isn't too bad. When you see it in motion, though, it becomes pretty apparent that not all is roses. The load times are pretty substantial between fights, and the animation has been absolutely shredded. Frames were cut left and right, making for some very awkward looking movements - especially since it seems that the transition frames between moves have all but vanished. The stage detail has also been cut pretty dramatically - animation and objects have all been reduced to a shadow of their former selves here. It also completely lacks the screen-zoom that was in the Neo Geo version. I don't want to crap on it too hard, because the Sega CD version of Fatal Fury Special isn't bad. It just seems to be a lazy port - the Sega CD could have done this much better. It's better than the SNES version for sure, but it hangs its head in shame when you compare it to the phenomenal PC Engine CD port. It's playable and fun enough, for sure. As long as you don't expect too much, it's not too difficult to have a good time with it. ___ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
