Khatti Meethi Dal is a traditional Gujarati dal known for its sweet and tangy flavor – a perfect comfort food for your lunch or dinner. Made without onion and garlic, this dal is simple, healthy, and perfect with rice or roti. In this video, learn how to make authentic Gujarati-style Khatti Meethi Dal at home using basic pantry ingredients. This is a no-fuss, beginner-friendly recipe that comes together quickly. Method Take 1 cup of toor dal, rinse it 2–3 times, and soak it in enough water for 30 minutes. Once soaked, add the dal to a pressure cooker with water, ¼ tsp turmeric, and ¼ tsp salt. Pressure cook for 5–6 whistles on medium flame. Once the pressure releases, whisk the dal until smooth and creamy. Set aside. In a pan, heat 2 tsp ghee (or oil). Add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp cumin seeds, ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds, 2 tbsp peanuts, and 2 broken dry red chilies. Sauté well. Add ¼ tsp asafoetida, 2 slit green chilies, finely chopped ginger, and curry leaves. Next, add 1 finely chopped tomato and cook until mushy. Pour in 1 tbsp thick tamarind extract, 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp red chili powder, 2 tsp coriander powder, and 2 tbsp powdered jaggery. Mix and let it melt. Add the cooked dal and about 1 cup water to adjust consistency. Let it simmer for 5 minutes on low flame. Finish with chopped coriander and a dash of lemon juice.
