It was founded in 1842 to raise money to continue building the Cologne Cathedral. This Cathedral was the backdrop for the choir's grand gala concert on September 17, 2017. 3,500 visitors attended the open-air concert and were treated to "the most beautiful melodies from opera & operetta" - accompanied by the WDR Funkhausorchester and gifted with solo performances by star tenor Juan Diego Flórez and soprano Eleonore Maguerre. This combination of melodies from Franz Lehárs classic operetta "The Merry Widow" ("Die lustige Witwe") is a spirited valtz filled with lust for life and brilliant harmony.
