There's a significant movement of young people leaving for unfamiliar countries, seeking overseas employment and emigration. Twenty-four-year-old Yang Seung-ho dropped out of college and boarded a plane to Australia. He arrived in an unfamiliar world with a settlement fund of 2.4 million won. Starting life in a foreign country is no easy feat, from opening a bank account and activating a cell phone plan to finding housing and even finding a job. Seung-ho dreams of returning to college in Australia and becoming an auto mechanic. Why did he quit college and leave South Korea? We follow his journey of settling in Australia, from the moment he boarded the plane to finding a job. ■ Betrayal of Effort: A Story of Youth Escape from Unemployment Park Jong-hyun, a senior in college, left for Japan with only one semester left until graduation. Despite submitting countless resumes, he was consistently rejected during the document screening process. He never once tried on the suits he had planned for interviews. Jong-hyun, who found the days spent feeling helpless, writing resumes painful, is now working part-time at a crab restaurant in Osaka, Japan. Jong-hyun says he's happy in Japan, feeling like he can do something, even with his part-time job that lasts until 11 p.m. What dreams does he hope to find in Japan? ■ What's Needed: Hope At a hotel in Kalgoorlie, Australia's largest mining city, a busy housekeeper is Lee Ja-ryong (23), a young Korean man. He makes a living by cleaning hotel rooms during the day and washing dishes at a restaurant at night. Jaryong has been earning his own living expenses, including his university tuition, since he was 20. Despite working tirelessly, his hourly wage often fell short of minimum wage. After paying tuition and rent, he had no time to prepare for the future. Mr. Jaryong eventually dropped out of college, saved up his Australian settlement funds, and came to Kalgoorlie.
