Research On Woolen Blankets? | Humans Of CCGS Ep1 | Ft. Dr. Fiona P. McDonald | UBC Okanagan
In this episode, we step inside the Collaborative and Experimental Ethnography Lab (CE2 Lab) at UBC Okanagan, arguably the coolest room on campus, to talk with Dr. Fiona P. McDonald about anthropology, visual storytelling, and why one elective can change the entire course of your degree. We get into her research on woolen blankets, the Hudson's Bay and Pendleton blankets, their deeper and often darker colonial histories, and how contemporary Indigenous artists across Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the Pacific Northwest Coast have reclaimed them as powerful anti-colonial statements. Dr. McDonald shares how she follows a single material across the globe, the ethics of working with living artists and makers, and what it really means to do ethnographic fieldwork. A huge thank you to Dr. Fiona P. McDonald for opening up the lab and to UBC Studios Okanagan for their ongoing collaboration. Stay tuned for a future episode on sensory ethnography, where we'll be thinking with our senses. Recorded on the unceded ancestral territory of the Syilx Okanagan people. #Anthropology #UBCO #VisualAnthropology #Ethnography #UniversityLife #UBCOkanagan #StudentMedia
