Oerbex 2025 Fort de la Chartreuse-Fortresse-Caserne-Prison-Hopital-Nature

A short excursion to the Fort de la Chartreuse, The Fort de la Chartreuse, which overlooks the Amercœur district of Liège, was built between 1817 and 1823, during the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, to protect the city. In 1891, the fort was decommissioned and became a simple barracks. It served as a prison for Belgian patriots during the First World War (1914-1918). Towards the end of the Second World War, from 1944 onwards, the American army used it as a military hospital. Decreasing in usefulness to the Ministry of National Defense, it was demilitarized in 1981. The last soldiers left the old fort in 1988. The city of Liège acquired the green areas of the military complex in 1998. Today, the building is abandoned. Most of the fort occupies a green space that is being reforested. Tree-covered vegetation covers its ramparts and glacis. Nature says THANK YOU Info on Wikipedia
