The Komi-Zyryans or just the Komi are one of the most ancient peoples of Russia. Their history goes back to Neolithic Age, or about 2000 years BC. Today the Komi live in the north of Russia – in the territory of the Komi Republic, in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Murmansk Oblast and Tyumen Oblast. About six thousand Komi-Zyryans live in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. They name themselves “iz’vatas”. They came here in the XIX century to look for places to graze deer. Many of them still speak their native language, wear ethnic clothes and lead the traditional way of life. How was the Komi ethnic group formed? What is their traditional activity and language?
