A dishonest businessman named Sushant Haldar is making China Duari nets that are more harmful than the banned current nets without any hindrance, with a trade license from the Union Parishad for “Fishing Equipment Manufacturers Factors and Sales Organizations”. Such a factory has been found in Bonthor village of Bilchalon Union of Chatmohar. It has been learned that Sushant Haldar, son of Kalipad Haldar of Demra village of Faridpur upazila of Pabna, has been operating this China Duari net factory in Bonthor village with a trade license number 206 in the name of Sithi Traders from Bilchalon Union Parishad No. 11 of Chatmohar for the financial year 2023-2024. During a site visit to the China Duari Net factory located next to the Bonthor Charak house, it was seen that the factory was surrounded by a boundary. As soon as you enter the iron gate, you see various materials used to make this net scattered around. A frame of thin square iron rods prepared to insert into the net. Thin plastic pipes to cover the rods. A large amount of new nets are stacked in a room. China Duari Nets are being made in frames in the shed next door. Locals said that China Duari Nets have been made in this house for several days. No one from outside is allowed to enter the house. Male and female craftsmen come and go. Some people in the area know what is going on in this house, but many do not. Employees said that China Duari Nets have been made here for a few days. In the morning, craftsmen come from different areas to make the nets. However, they also said that they have a trade license. Despite repeated attempts to contact the owner of the factory, Sushant Haldar, he could not be found. China gillnets or fishing traps are more harmful to aquatic biodiversity than current nets. This net is capable of trapping fish in a delicate manner. Since the distance from one knot to another in the weaving of the net is very small, once the fish or any other small aquatic animal enters the net, it cannot get out. China gillnets can catch more fish with less effort than other nets. As a result, China gillnets have become more popular among fishermen in this area. Fishermen are now turning to China gillnets instead of current nets to catch fish. Although production, sale, marketing, and use are prohibited, unscrupulous fishermen are killing mother and fry fish to get thousands of nets every day in the Chatmohar bils and rivers. As a result, indigenous fish species are gradually becoming extinct. If the use of this net continues, there is a fear of extinction of fish and other small aquatic animals. Aquatic biodiversity will face threat. Bilchalon Union Parishad Chairman Akhtar Hossain said that I have given the trade license of "Fishing Equipment Manufacturer and Sales Organization" in the name of Sithi Traders. However, I do not know that the owner Sushant Haldar is making China Duari nets with this trade license. When I informed Chatmohar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Reduanul Halim about this, he asked me to talk to the fisheries officer. When I informed the Assistant Commissioner (Land), he advised me to talk to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer. On the other hand, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Abdul Matin working in Chatmohar said that the manufacture, use, marketing and transportation of China Duari nets are prohibited.
