How To Make Your Own Ice Melt: An Easy DIY Sidewalk & Driveway Deicer

How To Make Your Own Ice Melt: 2-3 parts warm/hot water to 1 part rubbing alcohol If spraying a thin coat on a thin layer of ice, add an ounce of dish soap for every 2-gallons of solution. If melting thick chunks of ice, slowly apply some of the deicer solution to the affected area and wait five minutes or so. Then slowly pour a bit more solution on the ice and wait a few extra minutes. At this point, you may be able to pry the ice off the ground and discard it. The remaining moisture should be able to evaporate away if the ambient air temperature is higher than the freezing point of the alcohol/water mixture residue left on the surface. This only really works as a curative solution for ice that already exists because the alcohol will evaporate away if applied before snow or freezing rain accumulates.
