Colossal Hatches Artificial Eggs - Could They One Day Grow A Moa?

How do you improve upon an egg? It’s a question we put to Colossal Bioscience founder Ben Lamm following the announcement that their experts had created a shell-less incubation system capable of supporting complete avian development. That’s right, they’re making artificial eggs. The achievement forms part of their goal to functionally de-extinct the giant South Island moa. These birds roamed New Zealand right up until humans arrived around 700 years ago, and if we ever want to see another animal like them, we’re gonna need a bigger egg. The Colossal artificial egg uses a novel lattice shell architecture, complete with a bio-engineered silicone-based membrane capable of matching the oxygen transfer capacity of natural eggshell. The system has welcomed its first healthy brood using an end-to-end process that can be replicated at low cost and high volume and is size scalable. So, from the humble chicken it could – theoretically – one day support Colossal’s goal of a functionally de-extinct moa. In the meantime, it’s hoped the technology can also be deployed to aid the conservation of extant and endangered species. Read more: https://www.iflscience.com/ill-put-my...
