The Kadirli district of Osmaniye supplies 80 percent of Türkiye's radish needs. The Kadirli radish harvest, which has also received a geographical indication, began at the end of November and will continue for approximately 150 days. We visited Kadirli, the homeland of the radish, a source of vitamin C and earning the reputation of "eat a radish and be like a radish." Women bear the brunt of this arduous task, from picking to washing, packaging, and loading. Soner Topalhan, President of the Kadirli Radish Producers Association, says the radish sector, which employs 6,000 workers daily, generates approximately 150-200 million lira for the district. The radishes harvested from the fields are washed in the Savrun River, which forms when snow flows down from the Taurus Mountains. Women arrive at work early in the morning, working approximately 12 hours, most of which is spent in freezing cold water. Working in the freezing cold, the women here work for approximately 150 days for daily wages to contribute to their household income. The radishes packed in the Savrun River by these women, who carry out such an important task, are shipped to all 81 provinces in Türkiye and some European countries. Soner Topalhan, a radish producer and president of the union, says that washing the radishes with snow water gives them their unique flavor.
