Instead of filters, skimmers, or artificial additives, I collected seaweed, rocks, sand, and seawater directly from the shore and let nature do the rest. Over 100 days, this aquarium evolved on its own. The algae and “corals” spread, the plankton exploded in quantity, unexpected creatures appeared, and the ecosystem went through phases of equilibrium, collapse, and recovery. From crabs and snails to amphipods, copepods, mussels, sea hares, and mysterious worms, this aquarium became a living window into a rocky coastal marine habitat. There were surprises, setbacks, and unexpected moments—including species that nearly wiped out the algae and others that thrived in the shadows.
