In the tumult of this seminal ndombolo album, "Feux de l'amour" (Fires of Love), a rumba whispers a name: Hamida… Behind this name, a woman. Hamida Shatur, born in 1976 in Kinshasa, daughter of Shabudin Chatur, a man of Indian origin, and Elisabeth Ndenge Vangu, from Kongo Central, left Seke Banza for the capital in 1996. It took only a year for "Feux de l'amour" to make her name a national anthem. The album, the first solo effort from the Wenge leader, was awarded a gold record on stage at the Olympia, with over 150,000 copies sold. Papa Wemba himself lent his voice to "Cavalier solitaire," like an elder blessing the family. In 2000, the album "T.H. Toujours Humble" cemented his success. In "Dis-moi amour," from which I'm sharing an excerpt for this post, the singer no longer hides behind the pangs of emotion: he names Hamida, celebrates her beauty as one might describe a wonder fallen from the heavens, comparing her to the most fragrant offerings of paradise. One dedicated song might be a coincidence. Two, and it's a masterpiece. Much has been written about his marriages, his breakups, and his reconciliations. I prefer to remember this: in the great Congolese tradition, where Wendo sang of Marie Louise and Tabu Ley as his queens, Hamida belongs to this lineage of women who gave a face to the melody. Life did what life does: the couple separated, each went their own way, and that's where the story becomes dizzying, because the separation erased nothing. The songs survived the vow. Today, an entrepreneur and founder of the company HAM'S, committed to agriculture serving local communities, Hamida Shatur has turned the page on the turmoil to cultivate, quite literally, her own land.
