But every supply line keeping it alive had to pass through NATO territory. Since 2022, Poland and Lithuania have been turning that vulnerability into a weapon. Here's what has happened: THE SOUTHERN WALL: Poland's Eastern Shield — a $2.5 billion, 700-kilometer fortification project with anti-tank trenches, dragon's teeth barriers, and German engineering units — is sealing Kaliningrad's southern border. Two border crossings remain nominally open. Neither functions for freight. 18,000 truck drivers are unemployed. THE RAILWAY STRANGLEHOLD: Lithuania has halted petroleum transit through the rail corridor entirely. In 2024, 371,000 tons of fuel passed through this line. Now zero. That fuel powered Kaliningrad's hospitals, buses, and Iskander missile batteries. Without it, those missiles cannot move. THE ENERGY ISLAND: The Baltic states disconnected from the Soviet-era BRELL grid and joined Europe's network. Kaliningrad was left behind. Its floating LNG terminal is weather-dependent — in November 2025, early Baltic ice allowed only two deliveries through. Each lasted twelve days. THE SEA ROUTE TRAP: The only remaining supply corridor costs four times more than road transport, crosses a NATO-controlled lake, and shuts down in winter. Russia is simultaneously losing 35,000 soldiers per month in Ukraine against a mobilization rate of 27,000. Real power is not measured in the threats you can make.
