Twitter @juangangel Program: Vistazo Agropecuario Rabies is a zoonosis, an underappreciated disease (WHO), whose etiological agent is a virus of the Lyssavirus genus, Rhabdoviridae family, which presents as an acute encephalomyelitis. It is transmitted with high efficiency to any mammal through the bite of infected reservoirs during the transmission period. The virion measures 180 nm in length by 75 nm in diameter, with a typical bullet shape. The virus is enveloped by a lipid bilayer (membrane or envelope), whose composition is similar to that of the neuronal membrane. Inserted within the membrane is the glycoprotein called G. Inside is the matrix protein or M, the nucleocapsid, made up of three proteins (N, P, and L), and the nucleic acid, which is a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA. The rabies virus belongs to the Mononegavirales order and the Rhabdoviridae family. Within the family, the most studied genera are Vesiculovirus, represented by vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), and Lyssavirus, composed of rabies viruses.
