Northwest Vietnam through my lens 2026 Part 1

Ha Noi to Mu Cang Chai This is the fifth time I've returned to Northwest Vietnam . The Northwest region of Vietnam lies in the country’s upper west, bordering Laos and China. Its rugged landscape is marked by towering mountains. Spanning about 50,576 square kilometers with a population of 4.2 million, Northwest Vietnam is home to over 20 ethnic minority groups such as the Thai, Muong, Hmong, Dao, Tay, and Nung. Northwest Vietnam stands out as a premier destination in Northern Vietnam and Vietnam overall thanks to its dramatic scenery, vibrant culture, and heroic history. With unique terrain, climate, geology, and ecosystems, it offers must-see attractions like Mount Fansipan – the “Roof of Indochina,” Mu Cang Chai rice terraces, stilt houses, distinctive cuisine, and traditions like bamboo pole dancing, then singing, brocade weaving, etc. Northwestern Vietnam used to have six provinces – Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Son La, and Hoa Binh. As of now, Yen Bai has been merged into Lao Cai, while Hoa Binh has been merged into Phu Tho. Garrya Mu Cang Chai 2026    • Garrya Mu Cang Chai 2026
