What Did Irish Sound Like 250 Years Ago? Irish Accents in Newfoundland
Here's a longer article I wrote exploring the hows and the whys of this phenomenon. https://brehonacademy.org/what-did-th... Many of you have correctly identified it is a Waterford accent. Newfoundland's accent is Ireland's ghost. In 1601, the Irish lost at Kinsale. In 1607, the last Gaelic lords fled into exile. What followed was conquest, confiscation, and the Penal Laws โ a future closing shut for the Catholic families of Waterford and Wexford. So when English ships came through Waterford port loading crews for the Newfoundland cod fishery, young men with nothing left to lose signed on. Thousands never came home. They built new lives on the Avalon Peninsula, and their island even took an Irish name: Talamh an รisc, "the land of the fish." Then something remarkable happened: nothing. Cut off in tiny fishing outports for 200+ years, with barely a road between them until the 1900s, these communities never lost the accent they arrived with. While Ireland's own speech kept shifting, Newfoundland stood still. What you hear there today isn't a version of an Irish accent โ it's the actual sound of 18th-century Waterford, preserved almost perfectly across the Atlantic. Press play. You're about to hear how Ireland sounded 250 years ago. ๐ช๐ ๐ช๐ข๐จ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข ๐๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฅ๐ง: ๐๐ผ ๐ช๐ฒ๐ฏ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ: https://www.brehonacademy.org ๐๐ผ ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ: ย ย /ย brehonacademyย ย ๐๐ผ ๐ซ: https://www.x.com/BrehonAcademy ๐๐ผ ๐๐ป๐๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐บ: ย ย /ย brehonacademyย ย ๐๐ผ ๐ง๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐บ: https://t.me/brehonacademy ๐๐ผ ๐ฌ๐ผ๐๐ง๐๐ฏ๐ฒ: ย ย ย /ย @brehonacademyย ย ๐๐ผ ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐ถ๐น: [email protected] (I love reading your feedback and questions!)
