It explains the nuances of words and characters much more than Duolingo or Drops and provides literal meanings and even talks about how characters are constructed. Grammar is also particularly strong with this app, and it provides grammar-specific exercises in addition to vocabulary-focused exercises. Hello Chinese uses video recordings of native speakers to teach new words, which is perfect for getting a real-world feel for pronunciation, although a few of the recordings did have a bit of dialectal accents. Overall, it's among the best tools a beginner Chinese learner can use, although the one downside is that it is not completely free. (the main course is free) But at $42 a year, it's easily affordable for a great tool to learn a new language.
