Deadly Straw Bullets. // Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany
After a tornado had ripped through our land, nearby housing developments, and farmland, there was a story circulated by a local farmer about the storm. He described that as he was surveying the damage to the buildings and property, he came across quite a bit of his crops to find that many of the pieces had pieces of straw embedded into them. He described them looking like pin cushions. Apparently he had piles straw nearby his crops that were not baled and the tornado blew the pieces into whatever fruits or vegetables were in the field. I never saw pictures or heard what the crop was but have often wondered if the story were true. This video is a test to see if straw is able to withstand the forces needed to push it into various pieces of fruit that are available. Straw is actually the leftover waste product from various types of grains or grasses, primarily the stems. The most common type of grain grown in our area is wheat, I cannot be certain, but I believe the type of straw used in this video are stems from the wheat plant.
