Transforming Slide Decks into Active Learning

Active learning is an evidence based instructional approach that shifts the focus from a "teaching paradigm" of passive delivery to a "learning paradigm" where students actively construct their own understanding. Defined simply as "doing things and thinking about the things they are doing," it engages learners in higher order cognitive tasks including analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, rather than just listening to a lecture. While meta analyses prove that active learning leads to significantly higher achievement and lower failure rates, it is often challenged by the "fluency paradox," a cognitive mismatch where the "cognitive friction" required for deep learning makes students feel they are learning less, despite their actual academic performance and long term retention being far superior to traditional, "fluent" lectures.
