On April 28, Baldan Bazarov, the former abbot of a Buddhist datsan in Buryatia, was arrested in the United States. In June 2022, Baldan Lama left Russia. He attempted to enter Ukraine to volunteer. Unable to do so, he went to the United States, where he applied for political asylum. He was recently detained by ICE during a raid. Currently, our fellow countryman awaits trial in a migrant detention center. For him, returning to Russia is not just a threat; it is guaranteed persecution for his anti-war stance. Baldan collaborated with anti-war organizations in Buryatia, which Russia has declared terrorist. He openly gave interviews, expressing his opinions on the nature of Russia and the real state of affairs in his native republic. For example, he supported the congress of political organizations and independence supporters in July 2023 in New York, where he spoke as an honored guest and blessed the signing of the declaration of independence of Buryatia.
