It was likely written in honor of Prince George of Denmark, who was the husband of Queen Anne of Great Britain. The title refers to a Baroque genre of organ voluntaries, where a specific organ stop was used to imitate the sound of a trumpet. It is a very popular piece, especially at weddings, and has been used in films and other media. The march was played during the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles at St Paul's Cathedral in 1981 and during the wedding of Prince Joachim of Denmark and Alexandra Manley in 1995. During World War Two, a version of the piece was used as a signature tune for news broadcasts from London to Denmark.
