🚨World Peace Reimagined: A Masterclass on a Nontraditional Path to Lasting Global Harmony

Shalom Aleichem Chevra, welcome back! What does a zealot, five brave daughters, a transfer of prophetic spirit, and your Spotify playlist all have in common — and what do they reveal about the real path to peace? In this shiur we dive deep into Parshat Pinchas, starting with Rashi's question: why does the Torah go out of its way to trace Pinchas's full lineage back to Aaron? The answer opens up something beautiful. The other tribes were mocking Pinchas because his mother's side descended from Jethro — the great idol-worshipping priest of Midian. They suspected his act of zealatry came from impure motives. But the Torah pushes back hard, reminding us that the same Jethro who spent his life in idolatry ended up becoming the father-in-law of Moshe and had the parsha of the Ten Commandments named after him. We so deeply believe in the human capacity to change. And Pinchas, acting purely for the sake of Heaven, earns the Bris Shalom — the covenant of peace — along with the eternal covenant of the Kehuna, because he hadn't yet been anointed when Aaron originally received it. We then move through the rest of the parsha — the counting of the tribes after the plague, the appearance of the five daughters of Tzelofchad (Machlah, Noah, Milah, Tirtzah, and Choglah) who boldly demand their rightful inheritance in the Land of Israel, and the transfer of leadership from Moshe to Yehoshua. Moshe lays his hands on Yehoshua and spreads his spirit upon him — a stunning model of how prophetic energy transfers from teacher to student. To become a prophet, the Rambam says, you need character, wisdom, strength, joy, and purity — and you need to sit with other prophets in the schools of prophecy, the original yeshivas. That leads us into one of the most grounding conversations of the whole shiur: the power of music. The schools of prophecy used holy music to bring students into states of devekut — cleaving to God. The Levites played in the Temple all day. King David's harp pulled King Saul out of his deepest depression. But the same principle works in reverse — dark music transfers the spirit of the artist directly into the listener. We talk honestly about what that means for the music we consume today, and we celebrate people like Yosef Karduner and Nissim Black as examples of musicians whose devotion to God pours through every note. The bottom line: be deliberate and intentional about whose spirit you let run through you.
