Aaron carried the names of Israel on his shoulders and over his heart, reminding us that the priest stood before God representing the people of God. Exodus 28 points us to Jesus, our greater High Priest, who carries His people perfectly before the Father. The onyx stones point back to creation, and the stones on the breastplate point forward to the glory of the new creation, showing that God’s people are precious, remembered, and represented before Him.
