On August 2, 1964, in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, armed North Vietnam boats reportedly attacked the U.S. Navy ship USS Maddox. This led the United States to increase rapidly its engagement in Vietnam War. Backed by the U.S., South Vietnam was involved in the warfare against North Vietnam that had the Soviet Union and Chinese support. The incident also led to further U.S. military activity, which brought the war to an end in 1975 with the north’s complete victory.
