The brilliance and tragedy of the greatest chess player never to become World Champion
Leonid Stein was among the few really greatest chess players ever. Kasparov believes that in 1973, Stein was World #1. Kasparov and Karpov had no doubt that Stein could and should have become world champion. But it didn't work out. Circumstances are sometimes stronger than us and when the whole world is against you, sometimes it's not enough to even be the best chess player of your generation. This is a story about Leonid Stein. He couldn't answer the journalist, whom he considers the best chess player of his generation, but the answer is, of course, obvious. The 1970s were supposed to be the era of Leonid Stein.
