Return to the Great Ohio Adventure Trail

Ohio is not known for its great overland or offroad trails. But that doesn't mean that if you live here or are passing through that there is nothing worth seeing. Welcome back to our second adventure on the Great Ohio Adventure Trail! This trail travels over 1,000 miles of scenic Ohio, from the Ohio River at RIpley to the shores of Lake Erie. Last time I drove part of the first segment solo, with nary a furry friend in site. This time Bill and I are taking both jeeps and both dogs along as we explore most of segment 1 (Davis Memorial Nature Preserve, Beech Fork, Scioto Brush Creek crossing, and Shawnee State Forest), all of segment 2 (Euton Road crossing, Dean State Forest, Copperhead Fire Tower, Wayne National Forest, and Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area), and segment 3 (more of Wayne National Forest) all the way to the CH&D Tunnel Number 2. This time, both of us will need to face our fears to keep going: Krys to keep driving those slick, icy, snowy forest roads, and Bill to see whether he can overcome that crazy fear of height on Copperhead tower. This part of Ohio showcases the Appalachian foothills in all of their wintery glory as well as several water crossings, a fire tower you can climb (Copperhead), an old iron furnace (Vesuvius) and a really cool abandoned railway tunnel (if you are brave enough to explore just a touch off the road).
