How King Hyojong Revived the Joseon Dynasty (Korean History)
#korea #koreanhistory #kdrama #koreanculture #joseon #history #historyofkorea (episode 54) Hyojong (효종), born Yi Ho (이호), was the 17th king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. He was born in 1619 and was the 2nd son of King Injo (인조). His older brother was Crown Prince Sohyeon (소현세자), born Yi Wang (이왕), who died suddenly in 1645. His father, Injo, was crowned when Gwanghaegun (광해군) was removed from the throne by a coup from the Westerners faction (서인). King Hyojong is remembered for laying down the foundations for the revival of the Joseon dynasty and planning an invasion of Qing with the help of Ming loyalists. He reformed and expanded the army and built many fortresses along the Yalu River on the Chinese border. He also instituted, in some parts of the kingdom, the Daedong Law (대동법). This tax law allowed farmers to pay their taxes with rice instead of regional commodities and ease their tax burden. His rule was relatively peaceful aside from the 2 battles where Joseon had to send troops to help Qing China in battling Russian forces. During Hyojong’s reign, Dutchmen were shipwrecked and stranded in Korea. One of these, Hendrick Hamel, wrote a journal on his time in Joseon and it's one of the first accounts of Korea in the Western world.
